courvoisier terrier sign
A doctor felt the gallbladder of a patient with jaundice caused by a tumor in the lower part of the bile duct. The patient did not feel any pain. Pancreatic cancer can make it impossible to feel the pancreas during an examination.
In a patient with jaundice, the gallbladder can be felt by touch and it does not hurt. This is a sign that something is blocking the tube that connects the gallbladder to the common bile duct, which is often caused by a type of cancer in the head of the pancreas.
If someone has a tumor in their pancreas or the area around it, they may feel pain in their right upper abdomen and right shoulder when their gallbladder is pressed on.
Courvoisier and Terrier were two French doctors who discovered that the pancreas can be felt during a physical examination. This finding is called the Courvoisier-Terrier sign. Acute pancreatitis and pancreatic head cancer can also cause the pancreas to be felt during a physical exam.
